Ochs und Junior announces the Ochs line Mese 2.23
Ochs und Junior is excited to announce the tribute to the Eames Legacy: ochs und junior’s Ochs line mese 2.23
What was the motivation for the design?
After the debut of the ochs line date timepiece, namely the mese 1.22 “Bauhaus”, ochs und junior presents the next iteration, ochs line mese 2.23. This piece draws inspiration from the distinctive color schemes popularized by the renowned American duo, Ray and Charles Eames, in the early 1950s.
Movement and Dial
Powered by the ETA 2824-2 movement, it incorporates Ludwig Oechslin’s unique module made of 2 individual components. The watch features a black dial and date disc, accentuated by pale green markers. Its hour hand is a smoky green shade, and the minute hand boasts a light green hue, providing a muted contrast. The seconds hand and date marker stand out in bright orange.
Reading the Date
The dial’s edge features 30+1 holes, which represent the date. The markers at 10-minute intervals act as guides. For instance, the 30-minute marker also signifies the middle of the month, i.e., the 15th day (since 30 divided by 2 is 15). With these intervals marking every 5 days, you can quickly discern the date. After a brief period, identifying the date becomes instinctive. Oechslin’s video, where he elucidates the date spiral for his perpetual calendar, also provides context for this date watch.
Mechanics
How does the date function work?
Oechslin has innovated by substituting the typical date disk with 31 holes in the dial, accompanied by a meticulously designed curved line. These punctures form a soft spiral, where the 31st hole intersects with the 1st. The curved line can display either the 1st or the 31st, but never both simultaneously.
Why does the 31st hole overlap the 1st hole?
The 30 uniformly distributed holes allow for precise reading of minutes and seconds (even minutes are holes, while gaps represent odd minutes).
