Tag Heuer x Mario Kart Collaboration

Tag Heuer finally unveiled yet another collaboration with Nintendo, but they’re doing it right this time. Not only are we getting two watches, but both are mechanical watches, one being a tourbillon.

Tag Heuer continues to embody the racing theme with a Mario kart collaboration. One is a Formula 1 chronograph powered by the Calibre 16, and the other by the Calibre Heuer 02T Tourbillon. Both are limited editions.

Tag Heuer Formula 1 Chronograph

The Formula 1 Chronograph Calibre 16 is the cheaper of the two. It has the Mario Kart logo text inscribed on the bezel. The bezel is ceramic and painted with Super-LumiNova®.

The pushers are surrounded by a red lacquer which reflects Mario’s colour. There’s also the letter ‘M’ on the crown and Mario on the kart on the left subdial.

The dial has a checkered pattern, a common theme for racing watches. The subdials also have a custom asphalt texture. A playful element Tag Heuer added can be found on the date window, where it varies between the Super Star, Bullet Bill, a Banana and more.

The case is a 44mm polished stainless steel so it will wear quite large. The caseback is solid stainless steel featuring the Mark Kart logo.

Tag Heuer Formula 1 Tourbillon

The Tourbillon version is more exciting. The case is made of Grade 5 titanium in 45mm. Titanium presents several benefits, such as being corrosion-resistant, non-magnetic and hypoallergenic. Compared to Formula 1, the case back is see-through for wearers to enjoy more Mario elements on the rotor.

The tourbillon cage features Mario, the Spiny Shell, and Bullet Bill.

The dial looks more complex than the Formula 1, featuring more red highlights and magnetic energy to the watch face. The strap is calf leather with red stitching. However, what made this different is that it’s a custom embossed pattern to a turtle. I haven’t encountered a strap with this embossing before.

I believe both version is a step towards a better Nintendo collaboration. Though it is disheartening for Mario fans that it is a limited edition, the next iteration will hopefully be more accessible to more people.
