Ulysse Nardin Introduces the Themarine Torpilleur Moonphase Aventurine & the Diver Starry Night

Ulysse Nardin is an independent manufacturer of high-end Swiss watches, distinguished for pioneering horological innovations and mastery in decorative arts and extraordinary watches. The brand has recently transformed the Diver Starry Night, and the Marine Torpilleur Moonphase Aventurine watches with the use of aventurine glass, drawing inspiration from Ulysse Nardin’s historic maritime timekeepers, which have been the pinnacle of dependable navigational aids.

The creation of aventurine glass is steeped in lore, tracing back to an accidental discovery in the 18th century by a Venetian artisan on Murano Island, renowned for its glassmaking. A mishap resulted in copper shavings blending with molten glass, birthing the shimmering ‘avventurina,’ or aventurine glass, demanding exceptional manipulation skill. Only the most flawless, bubble-free slices, studded consistently with copper sparkles, are selected to craft the watch dials.

Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, Ulysse Nardin garnered acclaim as a premier supplier of deck chronometers, serving over 50 naval forces surveying bodies, and observatories globally. Its precise instruments were vital for maritime navigation. The brand’s legacy led to the creation of the signature Marine Chronometer. In 2017, this lineage was furthered by the launch of the Marine Torpilleur, a watch encapsulating the aesthetic and functional essence of its progenitor.

The Marine Torpilleur Moonphase Aventurine, a rare series limited to 300 units, showcases a dial mimicking a starlit sky encased in a 42 mm stainless steel shell. It houses the UN-119 calibre, birthed entirely within Ulysse Nardin’s workshops, featuring a DIAMonSIL escapement and a silicon balance spring for enhanced durability. Notably, the timepiece sports a dual counter for power reserve and seconds alongside a moon phase display, augmenting its nocturnal charm. A blue alligator leather strap complements this water-resistant marvel.

Conversely, the Diver Starry Night evokes the galaxy’s allure with its striking dial, born from layering mother-of-pearl with blue aventurine glass. Adorned with diamonds along its bezel and hour markers, its UN-816 calibre heart employs a silicon escapement. The 39 mm stainless steel diver’s watch is designed to endure depths up to 300 metres, with either a rubber or alligator strap, and ensures visibility in low light with SuperLuminova®-coated elements.
